Whitby Harbour tragedy inquest begins
TWO of the three people who lost their lives in the Whitby boat tragedy last year were not wearing a buoyancy aid when the craft overturned an inquest has heard.
Andrew Carrick (45), his partner Jill Russell (48) and John Carrick lost their lives on 23 November when their boat Last Call was caught in rough sea's outside Whitby Harbour.
An inquest into their deaths today heard from key witnesses who saw the craft go out, with many expressing their disbelief that the craft was attempting to go out.
An off duty police sergeant from Bedfordshire told the inquest how he tired to get the attention of those in the boat.
"I was running down the pier yelling at them to turn back but they couldn't hear me," said Sgt Peter Fitzgibbon, from Luton.
A member of Whitby lifeboat crew also told how only Ms Russell was wearing a buoyancy aid when he saw the craft leave the harbour.
Coroner Richard Watson said the post mortem on the three showed they all died from immersion in sea water.
The inquest was adjourned until 16 July.
