Wettest Whitby for 50 years
WHITBY has suffered its wettest February for more than half a century, new figures have revealed.
And in a miserable month which saw the big freeze cause roads chaos, landslides, schools to close and sports fixtures to be hammered, several other unwelcome records have been achieved.
Peter Wallace, who compiles weekly weather records for the Whitby Gazette, said a total of 98.5mm – around four inches – of rain fell on the area in a remarkable month of records, making it the heaviest total for the month since 1958, when 101mm fell.
February was also the coldest in the Whitby area since 1986, with the mercury not rising above 6.3 degrees Celsius during the day.
And a gloomy month was rounded off by being the least sunny since 1991.
The records don't stop there – the three winter months of December, January and February were the coldest since 1978-79.
In that same period, there were 34 days – more than a third – when the area was struck by snow or sleet and 29 days when snow was lying on the ground.
And the snowfall was the heaviest for the district since 1985-86.
Mr Wallace said he doesn't think the changes in weather have anything to do with global warming and temperatures just go up and down with the weather.
"In 1986 it was very cold but we've also had a lot of mild years," he said.
