The George Hotel in Whitby

A man with learning difficulties was verbally assaulted and hit around the head near the George Hotel, and police are appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.

The incident occurred between 9pm-10pm on Sunday March 16 when the victim, a 23-year-old local man, was assaulted.

Anyone who can assist with this enquiry should contact Whitby police on 101, select option 2.

PC Tom Rollinson, of Whitby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “This was an apparently unprovoked attack on a vulnerable member of our community.

“If you witnessed the assault or can identify the man responsible, I urge you to contact the police straight away.”

The victim was approached by a man who was verbally abusive to him before hitting his head. As a result he suffered minor injuries which did not require treatment.
