Visit marks 20th anniversary

A GROUP of German visitors are visiting Whitby to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the borough being twinned with the German town of Osterode.

The visit began on Wednesday when the party flew in from Osterode.

They have taken in a full programme of events for three days of their visit before travelling to York on a personal trip on Sunday. They will then return to their home country.

Activities included the viewing of the various In Bloom entries in Filey, tours of the new Woodend Creative Workspace, the Rotunda Museum in Scarborough, and a swing in the park concert at Peasholm Park.

Tomorrow they will take in a special visit to Whitby where they will see the new skate park on the West Cliff and travel on the steam bus Elizabeth around the town.

To mark the occasion, a new website www.scarborough.gov.uk/towntwinning has been set up which highlights the history of the twinning and include images from the official signing in 1988 which is to be launched at the Scarborough Spa tomorrow.

Speaking about the visit the new mayor of the borough, Coun Eileen Vickers said: “I am really looking forward to the visit from Osterode and cementing further the special relationship we have with the town.

“We have picked out a wide variety of activities for our guests which we hope will show them the changing face of the borough.”

Coun Tom Fox, leader of Scarborough Council added: “It is fantastic we have had this link for the past 20 years.

“It is important to mark these milestones and I think this trip will prove to be successful and will create an even stronger link between the two towns.”
