Village gardens to be opened up
GREEN-fingered villagers have been busy in preparation for an annual open gardens event on Sunday.
Robin Hood's Bay and Fylingthorpe is hosting its event with 28 gardeners opening their gardens to raise money for charity.
Organiser Sue Tucker lost her mum Betty Tucker to Alzheimer's disease four years ago and now runs the fund-raiser in her memory.
The gardens run the full length of Thorpe Lane including Sunnyside Farm, from Sledgates through Fylingthorpe and into Robin Hood's Bay.
Participating gardens including Courtyard Cottage and Mill Dyke will be marked by balloons tied outside.
There will be stalls including a tombola, refreshments, plant stalls, books stalls and music.
This is its fourth year and new this year is Thorpe Hall, which is historically famous in Robin Hood's Bay
Last year 2,000 was raised for Alzheimer's Society and lifelike sculptures of deer made out of logs should once again prove a real hit.
"There are some very, very varied vegetable gardens, big ornamental ponds and a train cut into a hedge," said Sue.
The term dementia is used to describe the symptoms which occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, stroke and many other rarer conditions.
Symptoms of dementia include loss of memory, confusion and problems with speech and understanding.
There are 700,000 people with dementia in the UK.
This will rise to over 1 million people by 2025.
One person in every 14, aged over 65, in the UK has dementia.
One in three older people will end their lives with a form of dementia costing the country 17 billion every year.
