VIDEO: Crowds turn out for Whitby park ceremony
MORE than 1,000 people turned out to celebrate the grand opening of Whitby's newly transformed Pannett Park.
There was a carnival atmosphere as locals and visitors flocked to the park to toast its 1.4m transformation, much of which was down to the work of volunteers the Friends of Pannett Park, whose 60 members clocked up more than 6,600 hours of gardening duties.
Town crier Andy Lowe opened the proceedings with Lord Normanby performing the ribbon-cutting ceremony to declare the park officially open.
People donned 1920s costumes to tie in with the history of the park, which was given to the people of the town by Robert Pannett in 1920.
A host of stalls, Whitby's old lifeboat, a craft marquee, Punch and Judy and a storyteller kept everyone amused while Charleston dancers, classic cars, a craft marquee and a fairground organ entertained the throngs of visitors.
Improvements in the park have included restoring the lilly pool, a state of the art children's play area, new paths and lighting and three new gardens.
Whitby's mayor Terry Jennison, who gave a speech at the opening, said he was delighted at the park's new look.
He said: "I can remember when the park was very rundown. It's great now to see it has been restored."
