The landlord of the Hare and Hounds has said that he is “totally shocked” by Sunday’s vicious stabbing which left one man hospitalised.

Matthew Boyes has been landlord of the High Hawsker pub for five years and said his is a quiet country pub, where incidents of violence are extremely rare.

“We don’t really get anything like that,” he said. “We have got a good local community and we all talk to each other and get on, so it’s totally out of character.”

The 30-year-old Derbyshire victim is reported as being in a stable condition in James Cook University Hospital after having emergency surgery in the early hours of this morning.

The victim had been staying at York House with his family, who have today been comforted by police and other holidaymakers at the site.

The arrested man, who the Whitby Gazette can not yet identify for legal reasons, is said to be a regular visitor to both the Hare and Hounds and York House.

Witnesses said the pair had got into a disagreement at the bar at York House Caravan Park over a dog, which had entered the conservatory area of the pub where the 31-year-old local man was drinking.

Any witnesses to this incident are asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1, and pass information to the Force Control Room.

Information can also be passed to Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111.
