Touring play set to strike chord with Danby villagers

A NEW touring play which is sure to strike a chord with its village audiences is coming to Danby next month.

A Village Life, by Leeds-based playwright Mary Cooper, examines the highs and lows of rural living through the eyes of a couple who retire to the fictitious village of Aldale.

The play was written after extensive research by the playwright in villages across the north east.

Mary said: "I travelled around the region last year talking to people of all ages and backgrounds about rural living.

"The play very much attempts to reflect the experiences and opinions of all the people who spoke to me so freely and generously about their lives."

The story centres on Margaret, who loves Aldale, the idyllic village she remembers from childhood holidays with her grandma.

But when she and husband Colin retire there and attempt to lead Aldale into The Best Village competition she begins to realise there is more to rural life than she had imagined.

Gillian Hambleton, artistic director of Northumberland Theatre Company, who are putting on the play added: "This is a play which is very true to village life – from everyday debates and dilemmas to the sometimes harsh reality of living in rural areas.

"It's all told with generous helpings of humour and pathos and I hope audiences will leave feeling thoroughly entertained."

A Village Life opens at Alnwick Playhouse tomorrow and tours both the northern region and nationally until the end of March.

It is coming to Danby Village Hall on Tuesday 9 March at 7.30pm.

Tickets will also be available from the village hall itself.
