Time team set to strike Gold’

A TEAM of history-buffs are braving the exposed clifftop at Goldsborough to discover more about the area’s prehistoric past.
Throughout the two-week dig, which began on Monday, archaeologists will be searching for clues about life on the Yorkshire Coast over 8,000 years ago.
Lead archaeologist Rachel Grahame said she believed the excavation will be the largest Tees Archaeology conducts this year.
“This is luxury archaeology,” she said of the dig, which is being funded by English Heritage. “It’s quite rare to be able to do this kind of dig, to say ‘here’s some questions, we want to answer them’.”
Goldsborough came to the attention of archaeologists in 2005 when they discovered a high concentration of flint finds from the site, and since then field-walking and geophysical studies have taken place. The 15 staff and volunteers will be digging back to a time, when Goldsborough was nowhere near the coast. Instead, anybody looking across the hills there would be looking towards a lowland area known as Doggerland, which now gives its name to Dogger Bank. Bears, wolves roamed the dense woodland that spread across the region, but it is evidence of our ancestors the archaeologists are trying to discover.
