Thea lands double in her first ski-ing tournament
A WHITBY youngster is making her mark in the ski-ing world.
Thea Fenwick (7) of Ruswarp Lane scooped trophies in the British championships in Yorkshire.
Proud mum Sarah (37), who works at Whitby’s Green Lane Centre, said: “She loves any sport. Along with her 15-year-old twin brothers Elliott and Joel, she loves to snowboard, she loves swimming, is in Whitby Seals and does kung fu.
“There were 12 competitors in her heat in the U8s but around 200 participants in the competition in total.”
In her age category, Thea won the slalom and giant slalom and was placed fourth in the moguls (bumps) as that was an under 10s category.
Thea, who attends Sleights School, was cheered on by mum Sarah and dad Mark (40).
She skis for Lion’s Ski Club and trains every week at Xscape indoor snow slope in Castleford.
The championships, which took place in Castleford, involve three events – slalom, giant slalom and moguls.
In the two slalom events competitors ski the same course twice and their times are combined. In the Under 8 girls, Thea came first in both of the slalom events.
In the moguls competitors are scored on speed, turning and tricks. Thea came 4th.
As this was the first time Thea had entered the championship, she was also awarded a novice certificate. Thea is also competing in the British Indoor Grand Prix Series – a programme of races throughout the summer – held at snow slopes around the country.
In this, Thea competes in the much tougher Under 10 age group, her best finish so far is 5th.
On 23 August – Thea’s birthday – she will be competing in the British Indoor Championships.
This is her first year of competing and only her third competition, although she started learning to ski when she was three.
