The man on the bridge 75 years ago
THIS old photo of bridgeman William Snaith was given to the Whitby Gazette by his great niece Alison Gunning (56).
The picture shows her great uncle, William Snaith, who was born in Whitby in 1883 and died in 1969.
He was a milkman in Sleights before he began work on Whitby Swing Bridge in 1932 where he worked until his retirement.
His first wife Sally Jackson was from Ugglebarnby; upon her death he married Elsie Waters from Whitby.
Mrs Gunning, of Low Fell in Gateshead, says she has many fond memories of her great uncle although none of these are of him working on the bridge. The Swing Bridge celebrates its 100th centenary celebration this summer.
A photographic competition is being run in conjunction with this.
The final selection of pictures will be included in the exhibition at the Pannett Park Art Gallery week commencing 8 August.
Initially entries must be in print format and a minimum size of 6x4 inches, maximum size of 10x8 inches.
