A teenage girl was sexually assaulted in Whitby on Saturday 9 March

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a teenage girl was sexually assaulted in Whitby on Saturday night.

The girl in her mid teens, was walking in the area of Stakesby Road and Station Avenue, when she was approached by a man she did not know between 9pm and 10pm last night. The man pulled at her blouse and indecently assaulted her, making crude remarks as he did so.

Police have carried out extensive enquiries at the scene of the incident including forensic searches and will be examining all CCTV in the area.

To assist the investigation, detectives are appealing for potential witnesses or anyone with information to come forward without delay.

The suspect is described as chubby, around 6ft tall, with broad shoulders.

He was wearing baggy trousers, black shoes, believed to be trainers, a baggy black or dark coloured hoodie and black leather-type gloves.

The hood covered his face down to his nose and only his lips, which were also described as chubby, were visible.

He is described as having a Yorkshire accent and a deep voice.

Detective Chief Inspector Andrea Kell, said: “I am appealing for anyone who was in the area of the footpath connecting Stakesby Road with Station Avenue, or in Station Avenue, Stakesby Road or the council depot at the rear of Stakesby Road between 9pm and 10pm on Saturday night to contact us urgently.
“It’s vital that anyone who saw a man matching the suspect’s description or witnessed the actual incident, gets in touch with us without delay.”

Anyone who can help the investigation is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option two and ask for Whitby CID.
