Team says thank you to its supporters

THE dedicated staff of Whitby Hospital's Heather Unit have said a big thank you to everyone who has helped support it over the years.

The unit in Whitby Hospital’s War Memorial Ward is a vital part of the work of Saint Catherine’s Hospice and cares for people with life limiting or life threatening conditions.

Nursing staff care for patients with advanced progressive illness, providing supportive palliative care, including symptom control, assessment, respite care and end of life care.

It has facilities for relatives to stay overnight with recliner chairs and sofa beds in the rooms.

Sarah Locker, unit sister who is employed by Saint Catherine’s Hospice, wishes to say a big thank you to everyone who has made a donations to the unit over the years.

“We don’t always get an address to write personal thank yous so I want to say how very grateful we are for what we receive especially when people hold collections for us at funerals,” she said.

“They enable us to provide a comfortable environment for patients and relatives.

“We have been able to buy electric recliner chairs for relatives to sleep in at patients bedsides.

“Also, more homely furniture CD players, radios, TVs and fund education courses in palliative care.”

In the past year there have been 132 admissions to Heather Unit, of which 77 were new patients.

The average length of stay is 10.4 days. Hospice practitioner doctor Julian Fester gives specialist advice on the ward.

While cancer is the most common illness among patients an important part of the hospice’s work is with patients who have serious neurological diseases.

Saint Catherine’s is heavily reliant on donations as the hospice only receives around 11% of its annual income from the Government.

There are many ways people can support its work by fund-raising, volunteering, joining the hospice’s lottery, donating at its charity shops including the one in Skinner Street or leaving a gift in your will. For more information call (01723) 378406.
