Teacher loses beard for first time in 36 years for charity
FORMER pupils of retired headteacher John Barber may shortly have difficulty recognising him when he loses the beard he's sported for the past 36 years.
John, who was headteacher of Hawsker Primary School for 19 years until his retirement earlier this year, is sacrificing the beard for a good cause.
His close shave is being sponsored in aid of the Wilf Ward Family Trust which supports children and adults with learning disabilities in Whitby and across Yorkshire and the north-east.
John, who would welcome more sponsors, said: "I've had the beard since I was 23 when I got pneumonia while I was in college.
"It grew when I had to spend 10 days in the sick bay and I've had it ever since. I don't know if my family will recognise me without it but I'll re-grow it as soon as possible.
"I hope it will be back in about a fortnight but I really have no idea how long it'll take to grow again."
Also helping the trust's sponsored effort are Adam Mansfield, Dave Pearson and Matthew Topping who are having their legs waxed.
Jill Pybus of Power Cutz barbers is carrying out the hair cuts and the leg waxing will be done by Kristy's Beauty Salon.
The venue for the event is Whitby Rugby Club and it's due to be held on Wednesday, starting at 7pm, with a raffle and live music by the Fylingdales Village Jazz Band.
