Tasty prize for Ruswarp youngsters

Year six pupils from Ruswarp School enjoyed a tasty prize after scooping a national honour for their culinary skills.

The youngsters aged 10 and 11 won the Cook for Life award which encourages the use of local seasonal and traceable foods.

The children from the village primary school's top year, cooked for 70 people last summer, assisted by local chef Rob Green owner of Greens restaurant in Bridge Street.

Local suppliers used included Radford's Butchers of Sleights and Whitby Seafoods.

As a special reward, Mr Green then invited them to his restaurant and served up a number of local delicacies including scallops and muscles.

Ruswarp School Headteacher Victoria Hewison said: "The children were absolutely fantastic, it's good that they had the chance to try food they might not otherwise get to sample.

"They found Mr Green truly inspirational and the meal a real treat."
