Staithes sewer work almost over

WORK is almost complete to repair a collapsed sewage pipe in Staithes after a major sewage leak into the sea last month.

Repairs are being carried out by Yorkshire Water to replace a 5m section of pipe between the pumping station and the sewage treatment works.

They have taken much longer than expected and had been due to be complete by the end of last month.

But contractors had to hand dig much of the 6m down through hard concrete to access the pipe .

A spokesman for Yorkshire Water said the work was due to be completed by today and the back filling by Tuesday.

He said the pipe hasn't been leaking since the incident which had caused surfers at the spot on 12 May to become ill.

It was eventually halted three days later.

"It was one of the most complex jobs we've ever had to do," he said.

"Residents throughout the entire operation have been absolutely fantastic.

"Their support has enabled us to work as quickly as we possible could to carry out a complex repair.

"We want to thank them for their ongoing support and patience."
