Staithes pupils serve up a slice of Victorian life

A VICTORIAN tea party has rounded-off a term studying the bygone era for year five and six pupils at Seton School in Staithes.

To showcase their hard work, the children invited their families to watch them perform a Victorian play, followed by a traditional afternoon tea party on the lawn.

The children all got dressed-up in authentic Victorian costumes, getting into character as chimney sweeps and flower sellers.

Getting into the spirit of the times, they had baked scones and pastries, designed and produced the menus and served tea and homemade lemonade before challenging their parents to an exciting game of cricket.

Class teacher Jodie Hill said the afternoon was a huge success, enjoyed by parents and children alike.

She said: "The children worked extremely hard planning the event and enjoyed having the opportunity to share their learning.

"We even received a thank-you card from a delighted parent."

The pupils have been learning about the Victorian era across many different subjects.

In art, they have looked at Victorian artists and reproduced stained glass windows and William Morris wallpaper designs.

They also studied the great Victorian engineers such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel, before designing and making their own reproduction bridges.
