Staithes lifeboat comes to aid of stricken vessel
A FISHING boat was towed to safety on Friday afternoon after its engine failed in rough seas.
The Staithes RNLI lifeboat, Pride of Leicester, was launched at 2pm when the local fishing vessel Emma Lou got into difficulties near Runswick Bay.
Emma Lou was on passage from Staithes to Whitby when the engine failed. The skipper of the 26ft vessel informed Humber Coastguard and Whitby's all-weather lifeboat was launched as the vessel was heading to Whitby.
There was quite a strong southerly wind blowing when Whitby lifeboat began towing Emma Lou in rough seas.
It was decided to turn around and take the fishing boat back to Staithes as it was closer. Staithes lifeboat was launched to assist with the towing and to manoeuvre the Emma Lou into Staithes harbour.
Emma Lou was safely moored in Staithes by 3pm.
Staithes lifeboat press officer Lee Jackson took this picture of Emma Lou being assisted by the Pride of Leicester.
"I took the photos on my i-phone as I happened to have it with me at the time and not our camera," he said.
"It was quite windy at the time.
"Staithes lifeboat assisted Whitby lifeboat to tow the boat out of the water and it was decided to get it back to Staithes and get it safely into the moorings.
"It's a local boat which is usually based in Staithes."
