A PENSIONER was rescued on Wednesday after his motorbility scooter broke down while riding along Whitby beach.

Richard Davis (81) of Belle Vue Terrace had been taking his Dalmation, Fifi, for a stroll to Sandsend and back, when he ran into to trouble.

“I missed turning up the ravine and found I was in deep water,” he said. “I ran unexpectedly into water but the chair went through that alright. Then it just stopped about 100 yards later.”

By going through the pool, Mr Davis had short-circuited the electrics on his scooter, causing it to lose all power. He was stuck for around half an hour on the beach before passers-by were able to contact the coastguard and the police for assistance.

Nigel Staton, of Whitby Disability Action Group said that he would strongly advise anyone against taking their scooter on to the beach. “It’s really not advisable,” he said. “When we hire scooters out to people, we are very clear that they are not to be taken on to the beach and into the water.”

The group does have beach-accessible scooters available and during the summer season these can also be hired from the beach management office. To contact Whitby DAG call (01947) 821001 or email whitbydag@btconnect.com
