Special day in store for two super Whitby mums

A SPECIAL day to remember forever is in store for two Whitby super mums on Mother's Day this Sunday.

Lisa O'Brien from Abbots Walk and Donna Dyson from St Peter's Road have been unveiled as the winners of the Whitby Gazette's Mother's Day Competition, run in conjunction with Co-operative Funeralcare.

This Sunday, the lucky pair will be whisked off in a limousine courtesy of Co-operative Funeralcare, where they will enjoy a sumptuous meal for two at the town's award-winning Cross Butts Stables Restaurant.

There, the two mums will also be presented with a bouquet supplied by the Co-operative Funeralcare's florist, The Flowerpot in Baxtergate and a bottle of bubbly thanks to Cross Butts.

The prize had been for just one lucky mum but on judging the entries, the company, based in Well Close Square, have donated another prize, along with two bouquets thanks to a generous discount from The Flowerpot.

The other bouquet will go to Tracy Shaw from St Andrew's Road after her 10-year-old son William drew a picture of her and said how she cares for him and his sister Laura (15), who has Cystic Fibrosis.

Dawn Hodgson from Co-operative Funeralcare said: "All the mums are worthy winners.

"The standard of entries made it really difficult to choose a winner so Co-operative Funeralcare decided to duplicate the prize.

"Thanks to the generosity of The Flowerpot in Baxtergate we have been able to provide three bouquets for these lovely mums."

For Lisa (39), the day out will be a real treat as three years ago she was diagnosed with the painful condition osteoarthritis in her knees and later fibromyalgia, a disorder characterised by widespread chronic pain.

She uses a mobility scooter and crutches to get around and has had to give up the job she loved at Whitby Community College where she worked with children with special needs.

Lisa will be going to the restaurant with her husband James (48).

She said: "I felt scared but now I feel delighted I have won."

And mum-of-three Donna Dyson, who works at Larpool Nursing Home and is a carer for her dad, was equally as pleased about her prize.

She will be taking her daughter Lauren (11) who entered her in the competition to Cross Butts and wrote how hard she works since her dad Charlie (35) lost his job.

Now the family – including sisters Chloe (9) and Charley (7) – have something else to celebrate as he has got a new job working away in Norfolk.

Mrs Dyson said she was speechless when she found out she'd won.

"I didn't know what to say.

"It was such a shock. I'm really looking forward to it."

Daughter Lauren added: "When my mum does have time she takes us out places with the money she does have that she saves up.

"In the summer when she has time off she comes in the pool with us and she takes the dog for a walk with us."
