Spa given go-ahead in Sleights despite objections

PLANS for a garage in the grounds of a house in Sleights to be converted into a relaxation spa have been given the green light, despite objections from a number of nearby residents.

The applicant, Simon Jay of Yeoman Hall, Woodlands, Sleights, said he intends to run the spa as a small-scale business with only one or two clients a day.

The plan involves a change of use for half of the existing garage block as well as the construction of a side extension and replacement windows.

The spa would include changing facilities, a masseur's table, a flotation tank and a relaxation area.

Mr Jay told planners it would enable him and his partner to run the venture as a small business while raising their family.

Yeoman Hall is in the grounds of the former Woodlands Nursing Home which was converted into flats some years ago.

Ten of the flats' residents objected to the proposal to convert the garage into a spa on a number of grounds.

They claimed that access to the garage is on a private road which they pay to have maintained and is granted on the understanding that the property is used as a private dwelling only.

It is not wide enough for two vehicles to pass.

The proposed spa clients would drive over their land and past their windows.

Extra traffic would be a danger to walkers, cyclists and children using the private access road.

They also claimed that a commercial spa would not fit in with the rural environment.

But in recommending approval, planning officers limited the permission to an initial trial period of two years to asses its impact on the neighbours.

They pointed out that the North York Moors National Park planning authority states that the rural economy will be strengthened by providing local communities with opportunities for entrepreneurship, education and training.
