SNOW LATEST: Schools closed after heavy snowfall

THE overnight snow has closed schools and made driving conditions hazardous around Whitby and surrounding villages.

The latest schools to be closed are:

Stakesby School, Whitby; Fylingdales School; Sleights School, St Hedda's RC in Egton Bridge; Lythe School; Lealholm School.

Esk Valley Coaches and Coastal and Country did not send out any coaches this morning.

The three largest schools - Caedmon, Eskdale and Whitby Community were all open.

Up to eight inches of snow has fallen on the North Yorkshire Moors.

According to the highways agency at just after 9am this morning, all priority one roads are passable with care, gritters were out last night and out from 5am this morning.

They will continue to operate throughout the day moving on to priority two roads this afternoon.

Drivers were warned to allow extra time for their journeys and to go prepared in the event of getting stuck.

More show showers are expected this afternoon but heavy snow is not anticipated.

Scarborough Borough Council (SBC) has announced that bin collections will also be affected.

SBC's Environment Manager said: "Due to the current weather conditions it will not be possible to complete all the refuse and recycling collections scheduled today in some areas of the borough. Residents are asked to leave their bins/bags out for collection tomorrow if they are not collected today.

"Collections in the Whitby area will be affected the most with the prospect of more snow later today.

"Although the Christmas period revised collection arrangements commence tomorrow it is hoped to have completed all outstanding collections by the end of Saturday by utilising additional vehicles and crews. However, this will depend on the weather as further snow showers and icy conditions could impact on the service.

"Residents are asked for their patience whilst we endeavour to maintain services during this period of poor driving conditions."

* Updates to follow.
