A MILITARY veteran from Whitby will be taking his survival skills and ski techniques to the slopes of the Alps this year to train other snowsport enthusiasts.

Neil Willis, of Ruswarp Lane, will be providing a ski instructor service for the Ski Club of Great Britain, providing some of the best snowsport training available anywhere in the world.

“I’ve been a ski instructor for many years now,” he said. “During my military career I was a chief instructor, delivering winter training programmes to Army, Navy and Royal Air Force in Europe and Scandinavia.”

However, Neil has also offered to pass on his expertise to people in the Whitby area who are taking to the slopes. For free advice, he can be contacted by emailing info@nerotraining.com.

For the first time, this year Neil will be leading a two-week programme, located in the French resort of Tignes. He will be training ski instructors, who will then pass on their techniques to ski. With things quickly able to turn dangerous when out on a mountain in subzero temperatures, his advice has the potential to safe hundreds of lives.

“It is a real privilege to be asked to help train the next generation of leaders,” he said.

The ski club was founded in 1903 by a group of ski pioneers and was responsible for starting the international competitions in 1920, leading to the first World Championships in downhill and slalom in 1931.
