FEARS are growing for the safety of a missing man who is currently the subject of a huge search between Saltwick Bay and Ravenscar.

The search for Alan McLean (61) is underway and Coastguard teams from Robin Hood’s Bay, Whitby and Ravenscar have been joined by two RAF Search and Rescue helicopters, both Whitby RNLI lifeboats, police and members of Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue team.

Mr McLean has not been since since 11.15am on Sunday morning. However, Claire Cuffling, proprietor of the guesthouse where Mr McLean was staying, said that she is growing increasing worried for his health as he left all the medication he needs in his bedroom.

Miss Cuffling, of Rounton House in Robin Hood’s Bay’s Mount Pleasant, said that it is likely other people may have seen or even chatted to Mr McLean, a keen walker, as he was a “really nice guy, really sociable”, who enjoyed walking with new people and quickly made new friends.

She became aware that Mr McLean was missing after he failed to visit the Victoria Hotel in the evening, something he had done without fail for the first 16 days of his stay in the village.

Staff at the Victoria Hotel contacted Miss Cuffling, who alerted police and then began to search all the pubs in the village for Mr McLean, without success.

She explained that Mr McLean was a keen walker, who would not think twice about hiking from Staithes to Sandsend, and so he could have wandered a fair distance.

He has no known family connections and had repeatedly extended his stay in Robin Hood’s Bay, saying that he would remain at the guesthouse while the weather remained pleasant. Miss Cuffling said: “Last night should have been his 17th night. He kept saying ‘Well the weather is nice, I might stay a few more days’.”

Mr McLean is described as white, 5ft 4in with a slim build and grey hair. When he was last seen he was wearing blue jeans, a blue Berghaus walking jacket and walking boots.

Anyone who can help to locate Alan McLean is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1 and pass the information to the Force Control Room.
