School crowns King and Queen
THE downpours of rain on Friday did little to dampen the spirits of the crowds who turned out to watch Fylingdales School's annual May Queen Celebrations.
The event, which has been going for 100 years, was moved to Robin Hood’s Bay Village Hall at the last minute from Dock End due to the poor weather.
But in keeping with tradition, all the children walked down to the hall accompanied by a police officer.
Around 100 people packed into the hall to watch the festivities including tots from Fylingdales Pre-School.
This year the school council elected for a Rose King and Queen and the names drawn out of the hat were year six pupils Megan Straw, who succeeded last year’s queen Iona Smith, and Tom Shrimpton.
Attendants were reception children Holly Ingram, Aimee Walker and Amy Jones.
All 54 children helped entertain the audience.
The oldest children in the school demonstrated sword dancing using real swords while the youngest danced to the song Oats and Beans and Barley Grow.
Some complicated maypole dances also wowed everyone present.
The dances were all choreographed by teacher Jean Hutt.
Headteacher Lisa Jones said: “It went really, really well.
“There were lots and lots of rounds of applause.
“All the children loved it.”
