Sandsend walkers raise £10,000
A SANDSEND trio has successfully completed a gruelling Coast to Coast walk – and handed over £10,000 to charity.
Dougie Raine, retired owner of Sandsend Stores, and his friends Malcolm Lloyd and Adrian Wood, took up the challenge of the 190-mile, 12-day trek starting in the village of St Bees in Cumbria and ending in Robin Hood's Bay.
The group has divided the money raised between two charities close to their hearts, Mulgrave Community Support, which will go towards funding the new bowling green and MacMillan Cancer Care.
Malcolm Lloyd said: "Various members of our families have been affected by cancer and it drums it into you, seeing the effects and the support you need."
The trio described the trek as "fantastic" and said the highlight was meeting fellow walking enthusiasts.
"One of the abiding memories is the people we met along the way.
"We also enjoyed the beauty of the scenery and the physical challenge, but we are still recovering now."
After retiring from the village shop, Dougie Raine wanted to give something back to the community.
He said he would like to thank all his former customers and suppliers at Sandsend Stores who have donated generously.
The Mulgrave Community Bowling Club opened three weeks ago and is a "roaring success" with 50 members already.
If anybody is interested in joining in, call Malcolm Lloyd on (01947) 893500 for more information.
