A FAULTY hand brake caused an unoccupied car to career out of control on Tuesday night, causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

The red Vauxhall Vectra had been parked in Gledhill Drive at around 10.15pm when the brake failed and it began to roll down the steep hill.

The car crashed through a brick wall and into a parked silver Volvo C70, causing serious damage to one side, although it is fortunate that no-one was hurt.

Andrew Gardiner, of Waterstead Lane, heard a loud bang as the car smashed into the wall. He said: “I looked out the bedroom window to see there was a car that was driverless and had gone rolling down the hill, smashed through a wall and hit a ladie’s car, parked on her drive. She was really unlucky because this car just rolled down the hill, round a corner and slammed into the wall.”

Witness reports the driver had run away from the scene towards the New Bridge were proved false as police who were called to the scene found the owner at home, unaware that his car had been involved in a smash.

He was able to unlock the vehicle, and police discovered that the hand brake was activated, but the mechanism had failed.

The vehicle was towed away early the following morning.
