Rowers on banana boat help raise cash
A BUNCH of bananas, the Pope, a sumo wrestler and various film stars were among those crewing rowing boats at a fund-raising regatta.
A total of 28 teams from Yorkshire Water, its sister company Loop Customer Management and partners, Laing O'Rourke, Arup, Black and Veatch, Mott MacDonald took part in the Whitby Harbour event.
It has raised close to 3,000 for the Water Aid, which aims to overcome poverty by enabling the world’s poorest people to gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education.
Engineering consultant Steve Bell from ARUP, told the Whitby Gazette they had enjoyed the day.
“We had a lot of people out watching us this year although it was a bit choppy at sea so we couldn’t take the boats out of the safety of the harbour,” he said.
“I want to thank the Whitby clubs for lending us their boats and coxes, though I’m sure they got frustrated by poor rowing.”
YW project assistant Amy Procter said: “Our staff have been quite visible in Whitby this year while we've been working to repair the pilings along a section of the harbour wall so we wanted to find a way of giving something back to the community.”
A raffle among teams raised another 500 which was donated to the WhitbyLifeboat
