Roundabout given new look by nautical design

A WHITBY roundabout will soon be a blaze of colour.

Whitby in Bloom unveiled their newly revamped New Quay roundabout last week.

The roundabout, previously decorated with four planters, now bears a design reminiscent of a Whitby Ketch – a ketch is a small sailing boat with two masts.

The design is complemented by sustainable planting.

The new development, which has been driven by the Bloom group, has been made possible by the generous support of Whitby's Co-operative.

The roundabout will be a key feature during the summer In Bloom judging tour of the town in July, as development on the roundabout had not begun at the time of the judge's spring visit.

Susan Davies, Chair of Whitby in Bloom said: "We do hope that our residents and visitors like the new design for this roundabout which was chosen by the bloom group from a selection of ideas and designs offered by John Freeman.

"It's been a difficult site to develop but well worth the extra effort. Dennis Gildroy and the Co-operative staff are strong supporters of our community and horticulture in the town and have made a major contribution to our efforts to enhance the town.

"Our thanks go also to the whole team which has worked on this project to make the new feature possible."

Coun John Freeman told the Whitby Gazette: "I did the original sketches after I was approached by the Whitby in Bloom group.

"I gave them a selection of paper designs and suggested they perhaps use stainless steel rods to represent the ropes that stabilise the masts.

"I've been along and had a look at the roundabout and I think they have captured the essence of my design."
