The crew on board a scalloping boat were all ready to bail out when their vessel started taking on water.
Rising Dawn was three miles north east of Whitby on Wednesday morning when it issued a May Day call to the coastguard.
Crew had put on life jackets and got life rafts at the ready before they were joined by the North East Guardian.
As the engine of Rising Dawn was still going it was escorted back into the harbour by Whitby’s lifeboat crew and berthed near the fish quay.
Members of the local coastguard team were also on hand to relay information to the coastguard from their look out at the Captain Cook statue.
