Rhino horn auctioned for £5,400
A RHINOCEROS horn stored in a Whitby businessman's garage has fetched more than £5,000 at auction.
The horn, which belonged to a prominent local businessman who wants to remain anonymous, made 5,400 when it was auctioned at Richardson and Smith’s West Cliff saleroom on Wednesday.
The antique ivory horn was one of two.
The other belonged to a former Scarborough couple who obtained the horn when they bought a house owned by a seafaring captain and fetched 5,600.
Auctioneer Rob Smith of Richardson and Smith said the horns had generated a bidding frenzy with four telephone bidders.
Both horns were bought by the same bidder who wants to remain anonymous.
Mr Smith said the two horns came into the auction off the back of the Smailes auction last year where a rare white Rhinoceros skill was snapped up by an Italian buyer for 7,600.
A further auction of a tusk originating from Kenya which belonged to a local woman made 2,000 a couple of months ago.
Mr Smith added: “The tusk was found in the garage of a local business man from a prominent family in Whitby.
“He said just sell it for whatever it can bring.”
