Rescue team called after boy (11) stuck in blizzard
AN 11-year-old boy from Ugthorpe sparked a rescue attempt after going missing in a blizzard.
The boy had been out with friends on Wednesday but was reported missing in the afternoon when he failed to return home.
The weather was drawing in and with snow beginning to fall and temperatures reaching freezing, North Yorkshire Police enlisted the help of Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team.
Team leader Andy Crossley said: “The call came in during the late afternoon and by this time weather conditions on the high land of the moors had deteriorated to near blizzard conditions at times.
“At the time of the rescue team’s arrival, the young boy had been missing for approximately two hours in Arctic conditions with more severe weather forecast.
“Luckily for the youngster, after only 20 minutes of the rescue team being on location, he was located safe and well, albeit very cold.”
Mr Crossley added 12 members of the team were tasked to the area and that conditions meant the boy could have been in real trouble.
“It was good he returned home safely and in good time as the weather was getting worse by the minute.”
There were three call-outs for the mountain rescue team in the past week across the borough.
