Railway gantry to get new home on North Yorkshire Moors Railway
A signal bridge gantry in Scarborough is to be dismantled and relocated to Grosmont.
Scarborough Council's planning committee unanimously granted permission to dismantle the Grade II listed railway gantry at Falsgrave to allow for modernisation of the signal system on the approach to Scarborough Train Station.
The structure, which dates back to 1911 and is the last cross track semaphore signal gantry in use on Britain's main line railways, will now be taken to a workshop for restoration and modi?cation.
There it will be shortened by approximately 5.6 metres to enable it to be relocated to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Once re-erected the gantry will be retained in operational use as working signalling equipment at the northern end of Grosmont Station.
Coun David Billing, who sat on the planning committee said: "I have spent many hours sat on the wall at Westborough with a notebook in my hand so I am slightly nostalgic about the gantry but this does seem a solution which is probably the best.
"If it remained where it was though was out of use, it probably wouldn't remain in the same condition as it has done all of these years.
"With some reluctance and sadness I support the relocation because at least the gantry will still be in use."
Coun Dilys Cleur, who also sits on the committee, said: "I am very pleased that people have taken the trouble to consider the future of the gantry and that North Yorkshire Moors Railway are going to give it a go."
The application also received support from English Heritage, The Railways Heritage Trust, The Ancient Monuments Society and Scarborough Railway Society.
The reasoning behind the project is as a result of a signalling improvement scheme by Network Rail, designed to provide a "modern, ef?cient and reliable" signal system for the Falsgrave area of Scarborough.
The 60m improvements include the replacement of the existing semaphore signalling with colour light signals, together with new points and track work.
