British Transport Police would like to speak to this man in connection with an assault on a train from Whitby

A member of staff on a train from Whitby was slapped by a passenger in an unprovoked assault recently.

British Transport Police has released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident, which took place at around 11.20pm on Friday July 11 on the 10.30pm Whitby to Middlesbrough Northern Rail service.

PC Mick Lindley said an hour into the journey, the man walked up to the train staff who was talking to a group of off-duty colleagues and their friends and family, one of which was a 13-year-old girl. He then slapped him across the face.

PC Lindley added: “This was a completely unprovoked assault on a member of rail staff who was simply chatting to colleagues. The 13-year-old member of the victim’s group was left hysterical following this shocking incident. Understandably the victim was also extremely traumatised following the assault.”

The victim was a 30-year-old man from the Redcar area.

The man went to the toilet and returned around 15 minutes later and continued to shout and swear at the victim before again slapping him.

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040 quoting incident reference PSUB/B4 of 18/07/14.
