Raiders net near £40,000 haul on outskirts of Whitby

RAIDERS have made off with a £40,000 haul including a lorry and powerlines from Ruswarp.

They were being used by NEDL contractors, Enterprise, who have been replacing cables between Sandsend and Ruswarp during the past few weeks.

The 150,000 scheme is to improve the electricity supply in the area to reduce power cuts and has included works between Sleights and Ruswarp and at Helredale.

The thieves rammed a locked gate to a field which Whitby Police say is opposite Ruswarp Mart in Sneaton Lane where the items were being stored.

The theft took place between 6pm on Thursday and 8am on Friday last week.

Police say they broke into containers to steal a hydraulic breaker worth 10,000 along with various copper conductors coated with PVC worth 2,500 and a number of copper conductor drums worth 5,000.

They then used the lifting arm on an Iveco lorry, valued at 20,000, to load the items before driving off in the vehicle which was later found abandoned in Lackenby in Cleveland.

PC Chris Bone of Whitby Police said: "A lot of noise must have been made during the course of the night when this happened.

"If anyone saw this green Iveco lorry on the roads during the time of the theft please get in touch with us."

Spokesman for NEDL, Michael Sargood, said the theft has not set their work back and it is continuing to go ahead as scheduled.

He said: "We've had to replace the equipment taken from Ruswarp.

"We have our assets insured but it is a big loss and obviously we are keen the people who have taken the gear are brought to justice."

As a result of thefts across the region NEDL have installed video surveillance cameras, renewed fencing and put up electric fencing at its most suspectible sites.

l It is the second high value theft in recent weeks to take place in Ruswarp.

In December 10,000 worth of cigarettes were stolen from a lorry parked in High Street which had been carrying out a delivery.
