A stalwart of Whitby’s fishing industry has been named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Anne Hornigold has been awarded an MBE for services to education in the sea fishing industry.

Mrs Hornigold is the chief executive of the Whitby and District Fishing Industry Training School and lives in Whitby.

She told the Gazette last night she was “thrilled” when she found out she was in line for the gong.

Mrs Hornigold said: “I went on holiday and when I came back there was a letter on the mat. I was completely gobsmacked. It was a surprise but myself and the team here have worked really, really hard.”

There will be a full interview with Anne in next week’s Gazette.

Folk music legend, Eliza Carthy will receive an MBE for services to music.
