Pupils learn crucial skills

SCHOOLCHILDREN from across the Whitby area learnt a crucial message when they took part in health and safety activities.

Youngsters from Hawsker, Fylingdales and Sleights Schools have been taking part in the Crucial Crew Initiative at Scarborough’s TA Centre in Coldyhill Lane.

All together more than 1,700 children from 72 primary schools in the Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale area will be taking part in the scheme.

The youngsters are put into teams and are then faced with different scenarios including fire safety in the home, a road traffic accident and a prison scene.

They also look at drug education and safety on the sea shore.

Co-ordinator Alan Bruce said: “At each scenario the children listen and deal with whatever situation that presents itself.

“On completion they return to the hall for de-brief and the school is given packs full of further information and follow up workbooks.

“This is the 12th occasion we have been privileged to use the facilities at the TA Centre.

“Many thanks must go to the staff at the centre for all the help they provide to help the event move more smoothly.”

Crucial Crew is an event developed across a number of different organisations including the police and fire service with a common purpose of ensuring the safety and well being of children and young people through enjoyable interactive media.
