Pupils design new gates for Whitby marina
WHITBY'S exciting marina project is a step closer to completion.
Architect Gary Hornsby, of Salt Architects in Beverley, met local wrought ironsmith, Egton-based James Godbold, with education co-ordinator Wynne Jones, who chairs Whitby Community Cultural Arts.
They looked at the portfolio of work from school pupils at Eskdale and Caedmon schools who have been working on design ideas for the wrought iron gates which will feature in the new marina building.
Scheduled to open in April this year , Mr Godbold will begin work on these gates at his forge and the students will visit the forge to look at the work in progress. Mrs Jones has worked as a volunteer to chair the Community Cultural Arts in eight primary schools where children have designed colourful wooden boards and also in the town's two middle schools.
The students submitted designs after being briefed by Wynne Jones who has acted as the liaison officer with the schools.
"The designs were of the whalebones, fishing and the sea, fishing nets, shells and a compass.
"There are drawings, charcoals, ink line, some of them were absolutely fantastic, we have taken elements from them for our design for the gates and the panel."said Mr Godbold.
