Pub's surprise accolade

THE COD and Lobster pub in Staithes has seen a flurry of custom since being praised in the Sunday Times.

The pub, which is run by Cheryl Sherlock and her partner Nick Emery who works as a barman, has had a lot of visitors as a result of the article in the Camper Van Man column which appeared on 10 August.

Chris Haslam wrote the column on his British coast highlights and drove 4,666 miles and visited 851 locations.

The pub was unaware of his visit and was not expecting any publicity, so it came as a complete surprise to them.

“It is nice to get this kind of recognition, especially from a national newspaper,” said Nick.

Listed as one of the 10 highlights in the column, the Cod and Lobster is named best seaside pub.

“There’s nowt drizzled, muddled or sun-dried at the Cod and Lobster, in Staithes – just an honest little boozer, perched on the harbour wall, that grows on you like a barnacle,” said the writer.

Cod and Lobster manager Cheryl Sherlock said (55): “I think it is marvellous, especially as it was unsolicited.”

Cheryl, from Leicestershire, worked in the pub trade with her husband Barry for 10 years and the couple moved to Staithes because they loved the area, having come here for holidays.

Sadly Barry died last year.

Cheryl said: “We get a lot of locals and tourists including walkers and day trippers mainly from all over the UK but this year they have also been from as far afield as Germany, Australia and New Zealand, often people who have links with the area.

Nick said the article “came as a nice bolt out of the blue.”

A customer with a nearby holiday home took the cutting into show the couple, who plan to display the article on the wall. Cheryl added: “We are busy at the moment as the article is fresh in people’s minds and this is the first time we have had an article like this written about us.”

“We don’t really advertise,” added Nick. “It’s not as though we asked for this so it really is an unbiased view of the pub. It’s a real boost and we didn’t expect it.”

The article is on the Times website.
