Pride of Whitby Awards raises nearly £4,000 - New video

THE curtain has fallen on the 2008 Whitby Gazette Pride of Whitby Awards following a glittering awards ceremony at the Pavilion.

One of the most moving parts of the night was a standing ovation from the 350 strong crowd for the family of Whitby soldier Damian Lawrence, who went up to collect his bravery award from Stuart Fusco.

George Tuby was not able to attend the awards to collect his lifetime achievement award but had recorded an emotional acceptance speech earlier in the day which was played to the capacity crowd.

Entertainment was provided by Yabbadabbadoo, Zephyr and Mark Liddell and a tremendous buffet was laid on by Somerfield, The Whitby Catch and Landers Butchers and Somerfield which had been drawn up by award winning chef Rob Green and expertly prepared by RAf Fylingdales' Garvie Semons and Patricia Oyston as well as Whitby Pavilion's Ruth Simonds and Zelda Hart.

Auctioneer Rob Smith got the crowd digging deep as the fund-raising got into full swing.

The auction was followed by a hugely successful raffle which, when combined with ticket sales, came to an astonishing 3,865.

It is now time for you, The Whitby Gazette readers, to make your choice as to who the money will be split between.
