Whitby residents are being warned to be on the look out for a convicted armed robber who has escaped from prison.

Police are urgently trying to trace 29-year-old Ricky Darren Beech, who absconded from Kirklevington Grange Prison in Yarm between 4.45pm and 7.50pm on Thursday (January 23).

He is serving an indeterminate sentence for an armed robbery at a petrol station in Hull in 2006, in which he assaulted a shop assistant.

He was jailed in 2008.

Beech is described as white, with dark hair and a beard, five foot nine inches tall, with brown eyes and two scars above his left eye. He has an England tattoo on the left hand side of his chest.

Cleveland Police is currently working with prison authorities and other local forces to try and trace him and say that he could be anywhere in North Yorkshire.

There is no information at this stage to suggest he poses a particular risk to the wider public however police are advising anyone who sees him not to approach him but to contact police immediately on 999.
