WINTRY weather got the better of a snow plough this week when it crashed into a road bridge at Egton on Tuesday morning.

Early morning snow made for icy roads across the district with several motorists experiencing minor bumps and skids.

Denise Lee heard a bang outside her cottage at Egton Bridge while she was letting her dogs out and was amazed to see the snow plough embedded in the bridge and a neat rectangle shape cut out of the bridge and stones in the water.

She said: “I heard a bang but didn’t look at the bridge directly. I looked up and there was a hole in the bridge and flashing lights. We went and had a chat and he said he just lost it.”

North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) said: “We can confirm that one of our gritters skidded on compacted ice as a result of this week’s wintry weather and hit the bridge at Egton.

“As a result of the damage, some of the stones of the bridge will need to be repositioned.”

The fire brigade attended a smash at Dunsley yesterday and one person suffered minor injuries when a BMW and an Audi crashed near Boulby Mine just before 7am on Wednesday.

Peter Wallace, who compiles weather records for the Whitby Gazette, said it wasn’t unusual to have snow at this time of year.
