Parkol launches Challenger at Whitby shipyard

A FIVE-year-old girl was given the honour of naming the latest vessel to be launched at Whitby's Parkol Marine.

Allie Buchan from Inverallochy, Aberdeenshire in north east Scotland, named the 19m twin rig Trawler, Challenger FR 90, at a special ceremony on Saturday at the boatyard in Church Street.

She named the boat for her granddad Alistair Bruce and uncles Martin (30) and Chaz Bruce (24) of Fuimus LLP of Fraserburgh.

Allie dispatched the traditional bottle of champagne against the port bow of the trawler which was lowered into the harbour by a 1,000ft crane.

The launch, as always, attracted a large crowd of onlookers and this time was no exception.

After the ceremony guests enjoyed a celebratory meal at The Magpie Cafe, Challenger was built by Parkol to a hull design developed by Ian Paton of SC McAllister to help achieve maximum fuel efficiency when steaming and towing.

It is due to complete engine and fishing trials towards the end of this month before steaming north to Fraserburgh.
