A Whitby woman is set to cycle 280 miles from London to Paris in just 24 hours as part of a gruelling charity fundraising effort.

Amy Bletsoe, 33, is undertaking the ride to raise money for a pair of charities, Scope and Cure Rett.

The Cure Rett charity is particularly close to Amy’s heart as her daughter, Grace, is a school friend of local girl Emlyn Coates who suffers from Rett Syndrome.

Amy said: “Until last year I had never heard of Rett Syndrome, which can occur in any boy or girl between the age of six months and two years.

“Boys usually die within their first year. Girls go through a period of regression where they lose the ability to walk, speak and use their hands.

“A cure for Rett Syndrome is extremely important to the charity. They plan to devote much of what they raise to research.”

Amy’s journey to Paris will be a race against the clock as 300 riders depart London for the 90-mile trek to Dover at noon on July 5.

Having crossed the channel by ferry, competitors will cycle across France through the night and into the following morning.

The ride is set to be a huge challenge for Amy, who is a relative newcomer to both the sport and charity fundraising.

She added:“Until two years ago, I hadn’t taken part in any sporting event, but raising money for charity and challenging myself is now a very important part of my life.

“I signed up for Tough Mudder last year and afterwards I was left thinking, ‘what next?’ Then afriend suggested taking part in the London to Paris ride.

“I started biking less than a year ago. I am training hard but it is a huge challenge.”

As part of her preparation for the London to Paris event, Amy is cycling the same route over four days in another sponsored ride.

She is also committed to undertaking a number of other sporting challenges this year including the Brighton Marathon, the Great North Run and the Sunderland Colour Run with seven-year-old Grace.
