Passengers on board Whitby’s historic lifeboat got more than they bargained for recently when they found themselves surrounded by a pod of dolphins.

The 30-minute cruises on board the Mary Ann Hepworth are popular with tourists, but owner Barry Sneddon - who filmed the encounter - said he has never seen so many dolphins in all the time he has been hosting the trips.

“There were around 100 of them,” said Barry. “I have never been so excited in all my life. It was unreal, the best day I have had on my boat in 30 years.”

In the days following, the dolphins have been spotted from Staithes to Robin Hood’s Bay, patrolling the coast in search of their favourite fish.
