Official Whitby Gothic Weekend dates unveiled

There are big changes ahead for Whitby’s Gothic Weekend now the official event’s founder has revealed the dates for April’s and October’s events.

In a shock twist, Jo Hampshire has announced her dates for autumn 2011 as 4 to 7 November- effectively extending the goth weekend festivities in town for three weekends.

The Bram Stoker Film Festival has booked Whitby Pavilion for Hallowe’en - traditionally used as the official venue for WGW - next year.

And Dark Daisy Promotions, run by Miss Hampshire’s ex-husband Sam Hoyle, who puts on many of the goth fringe events around town has arranged its programme of events to run from 28 to 30 October 2011 at Whitby Rifle Club, the Coliseum and The Met among others.

April’s dates also see a clash among organisers with the official Whitby Gothic Weekend set to take place on 25 to 27 March 2011 while Dark Daisy Promotions dates have been unveiled as 1 to 3 April 2011.

In a statement to the Whitby Gazette Miss Hampshire said: “In September of this year, various parties involved in the unofficial Gothic Weekend fringe events jointly announced their dates for Spring 2011 in advance of ourselves. These were however, not the dates booked by the official event.

“This presented us with two options – we could either cancel our planned dates to attempt to coincide with the unofficial fringe (which would involve altering a considerable amount of previously confirmed arrangements), or we could go ahead with our original dates and plans.

“While we have always supported any events that add to the weekend as a whole as this creates an enhanced and more varied experience for our customers, for obvious financial reasons we cannot support events that are run in direct opposition to us.

“For these reasons we have chosen to go with our original intended dates which are March 25th - 27th 2011.

“In retrospect, this severance should have taken place 18 months ago when this situation initially developed, but the unofficial fringe announcement has now prompted our decision by creating the opportunity for us to move forward and further secure our stability for the years ahead.”
