Oboeist to steal show
AN outstanding oboeist will be the star of the show at Whitby Music Club's latest concert tomorrow.
Up-and-coming professional oboe player James Turnbull is sure to impress local music lovers when he plays a themed concert – The Romantic Oboe – in Cdmon School Hall at 7.30pm.
Accompanied by Craig White on piano, his programme includes romances by Robert and Clara Schumann, fantasy pieces by Carl Nielson, a Soliloquy by Sir Edward Elgar, Six Studies for Cor Anglais by Ralph Vaughan Williams and several arrangements of Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words.
Born in 1984, James started playing the oboe aged just seven years old. He graduated from Christ Church Oxford with a first class honours in music and gained post-graduate diplomas in Performance and Teaching.
Highlights of his career to date include being principal oboeist in the National Youth Orchestra in 2002, playing under Sir Simon Rattle, playing Bach's Concerto for oboe and violin at St John's Smith Square and a Mozart Quintet with the Allegri String Quartet in 2004 and performing live on BBC Radio 3's In Tune and Songs of Praise.
Craig White is a talented international performer, too, whose many triumphs also include playing with the Allegri String Quartet, accompanying Korean violinist Young-Ying Yu and in Brussels with his piano trio.
