No crime increase over busy Regatta say police

Whitby Regatta passed off without causing local police any issues says the town’s inspector.

Crime statistics for the regatta weekend, compared with the same time last year is down, according to Insp Andy Colbourne.

Between August 8 and 11 this year, there were 16.7% less crimes than the comparitive dates in 2013.

He said: “Generally speaking, the regatta is not that busy crime-wise.

“Over that period we didn’t see an increase in crimes and that reflects the good nature of the event.

“Although there is an influx of tourists, it doesn’t spur criminals.”

Extra officers and patrols were drafted in.
