New Whitby bid for a supermarket and petrol station - HAVE YOUR SAY
The Whitby Gazette has learnt a major chain, along with York-based developers S Harrison Ltd, is planning a supermarket and a petrol station at Sneaton Castle Farm off High Stakesby Road – the site of a farm blaze last Friday.
The developer would not name the supermarket it has chosen to take forward with the plans but did say it would offer a choice to the town between it and Sainsbury's, which has plans to open a store on Stainsacre Lane industrial estate.
Harrison will be sending a team to meet Scarborough Borough Council's planning committee on 1 October to discuss the plans before submitting an application.
Harrison director David Clancy told the Whitby Gazette the company would be engaging with the public.
He said: "What we want to do is offer the people of the town a choice to ensure they get the supermarket that is right for them.
"We feel that this one would be better as it is on the west side where the majority of people live and also has room for a filling station.
"What we would also look to do, if the council wants it, would be to build some affordable housing on the land also, as well as some healthcare and welfare provision."
The company was introduced to the Order of the Holy Paraclete by an agent to look at uses for the land and has a first option to purchase the land.
It had approached a number of supermarkets and has chosen one to take forward as its preferred option. It added the town was not large enough to accommodate both its and Sainsbury's planned development.
