New deal to bring play park dream step closer
CHILDREN in Sleights are to benefit from a totally revamped play park in the village.
Under a new agreement, Scarborough Council will be responsible for designing and managing the potential 177,000 project – but the land will be leased to the Ingham Park Play Committee.
The move was approved by the council’s cabinet on Tuesday with Coun Jane Kenyon declaring it a huge step forward for the village.
She said: “Sleights is one of the biggest villages in North Yorkshire, if not England and until now the youth facilities are lamentable and for these improvements to be made would be highly, highly significant.”
The report that went before the cabinet also praised the hard work put in by the group.
It said: “This proposal is unusual in that a local constituted community group, the Ingham Park Play Committee, has initiated the scheme and progressed it, carrying out the community consultation and obtaining outline designs and quotations without consulting the council parks and countryside service. It is clear, however, the proposal complements and contributes to the council’s policies and it will make a first-class new facility for the community of Sleights and the neighbouring villages whose existing play facilities are very poor.”
Lisa Ward, one of the members of the Ingham Park Play Committee, said they were delighted with the news.
“I want to thank the local councillors, especially Tim Lawn, for their help in negotiating with the council.”
The council will now revise the design for the revamped facilities and will project manage the build, which will include play equipment, landscaping, stepping stones and re-design of the area.
The money, it is hoped, will come from the LEADER programme, the Big Lottery Community Spaces, Sleights Parish Council, and Coun Herbert Tindall who donated 200 of his own money to the project.
